LICHENIC BIOMONITORING OF TRENTO'S AIR QUALITY AND  GIS

The present two-year RESEARCH PROJECT
was carried out from February 2005 to February 2007 with Forms II A and II B.
It was partly financed by CASSA DI RISPARMIO DI TRENTO E ROVERETO FOUNDATION as a result of a “Competition for Projects of Didactic Innovation”announced among the schools in Trentino in the autumn of 2004.

Disciplines involved: NATURAL SCIENCES and TOPOGRAPHY

Co-ordinating Teacher: Prof. Giuseppe Ciola
Collaborating Teachers: Prof.ssa Marina Menotti Prof. Marco Frenez
MTSN (Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali)
Partner Authorities: ITC-IRST (Istituto Trentino di Cultura - Istituto per la Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica)

APPA (Agenzia Provinciale per la Protezione dell'Ambiente)

IPRASE (Istituto Provinciale per la Ricerca, l'Aggiornamento e le Attività Educative)

SYNTHETIC DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

This Project was proposed to the Forms e (s.y. 2004-05) of the Istituto per Geometri “A. Pozzo” in Trento, involving in an interdisciplinary way Natural Sciences and Topography for about two years. Some environmental, cartographic and data processing knowledge was spread, making students aware of the main themes of air pollution.
Lichenic biomonitoring may be a valid medium for estimating the territory environmental modification degree.
International-level studies point out lichenic biovariety as a parameter for classifying the air quality in our towns.
Therefore through standardized surveying procedures we can obtain the spatial data of environmental kind that allow to attain those goals.
At present these topics are extremely interesting, both for the population health and for the problems connected with the vehicle traffic restriction.
For our biomonitoring we have chosen a methodology simplified in comparison with Dr. Nimis’s and easily reproducible by Secondary Schools, too.
Our work has been subdivided into three steps: the first one of research and biological sampling, the second one of statistical reelaboration and of a thematic WEB-GIS cartographic construction, the third one of  Web production of the themes faced, of the cartography come off and of the statistical reelaborations executed.
The first two steps were carried out in the spring 2005 and in the school year 2005-2006, while the third one came to a conclusion in the spring 2007.

In detail we have seized the opportunity of agreeing to a formative proposal by Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali (Workshop of lichenic biomonitoring) and to another one by Rete di Educazione ambientale dell’APPA (Lessons of cartography and GIS).
The co-operation with IRST has been developing with moments of continuous and innovative training between the teachers of the Project and the Researchers of Istituto di Ricerca, with regard to the use of palmar Computers and GPS.
IRST, Museum, APPA Researchers and our collaborators have contributed to the formation of teachers and students with some moments in the classrooms and with tutoring forms during the first steps of the surveys carried out with the palmar Computers.
We wish the methodology stated may be used in other contexts and our surveys with the results shared with the Authorities that collaborated (MTSN, ITC-IRST, IPRASE, APPA) set up a first database for a schools future network that will be able to widen monitoring to our provincial territory.

Quadrant cartography  is a first level of described results and it is easily reproducible with any Form of students, by using  that we provide in this work.
Only as a sperimentation we have decided to georeference the survey, collecting  the data with some palmar PCs and representing the result of the survey itself with a WEB-GIS
The present hypertext that shows a total research activity of the various groups, subdivided in its topics, is conclusive documentation of our work..
